  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for crumble topping)
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest
  • Juice from half a lemon (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Prepare the filling by peeling and slicing apples. Toss in a skillet with lemon juice, sugars, flour, and spices.
  3. Cook the apple mixture over medium heat for about 20 minutes until tender.
  4. Roll out chilled pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
  5. Pour cooled apple filling into the crust.
  6. For the crumble topping, mix flour, sugars, and salt; combine with melted butter until crumbly.
  7. Sprinkle topping over apples and bake for 15 minutes at high heat; reduce to 350°F (175°C) for an additional 35 minutes.
  8. Cool on a wire rack for about four hours before serving.
