  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time followed by vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture until just combined.
  5. Spread the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 22–25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. For the glaze, melt butter in a saucepan until golden brown, then whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Pour glaze over cooled bars and let set before slicing.
