Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound uncooked bratwurst sausage
  • 34 russet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for potatoes)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for gravy)
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 3 ounces stout beer (like Guinness)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add bratwurst and brown on all sides for about 10-12 minutes. Remove from skillet.
  2. Boil water in a pot. Add sliced russet potatoes and cook until tender, approximately 15-20 minutes. Drain.
  3. In the same pot, mix drained potatoes with butter and buttermilk. Mash until smooth; season with salt and pepper.
  4. In the skillet used for sausages, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté sliced onions until soft (5-7 minutes). Stir in flour, then gradually add stout beer and beef broth, simmering until thickened.
  5. Return sausages to the skillet to warm through before serving over mashed potatoes with gravy.
