  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 large ripe bananas (1 1/2 cups mashed)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/4 cup canola oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg (at room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (divided)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and sea salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. Stir in melted butter and oil until combined.
  4. Mix in brown sugar, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Gently fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined; avoid overmixing. Fold in 3/4 cup chocolate chips.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top. Bake for 50–65 minutes or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.
  7. Cool in the pan for about 15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
