  • ½ cup dried cherries, chopped
  • 1 cup Dr. Pepper soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1⅓ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
  • ½ teaspoon all spice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan and dust it with flour.
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice.
  3. In another bowl, beat together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually mix in buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, prunes, and cherries.
  4. Alternately add the dry mixture and boiling water along with Dr. Pepper to the wet ingredients until well combined.
  5. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for about 34 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
